Bingo

Bingo is a game of chance which is popular among people of all ages. It can be used to teach vocabulary, mathematics, geography and so on in class rooms. It is a very interesting game and a enjoyable pass time.

Bingo was created in 1929. There is an interesting story behind the game. A salesman in New York saw this game in a carnival where it was called Beano. The players of this game placed a bean on their cards. When that salesman returned his home , he told his friends about the game and played with them. One of his friend shouted the word "Bingo" instead of Beano and from that time it is called with the name Bingo.

Now days it has become very popular. Bingo was popularized in Australia in 20th century. In Australia it was formerly known as "Housie-Housie". The game was played by cards and the tokens. A person had to place his token on his card when his number was called. When a person won he would call "House".

Bingo is played in large halls. The rules of the game have variations from place to place. So, usually the brochures are available on the locations containing rules of the games. Players of Bingo have to purchase Bingo cards. A card is in the form of a grid containing five rows and five columns. Each row contains five numbers corresponding to a particular letter of the world BINGO. So, there are total 25 cells in a BINGO card. There are 24 numbers in 24 cells while one cell remains empty.

The numbers in the B column lie among 1-15.
The numbers in the I column lie among 16-30.
The numbers in the N column lie among 31-45.
The numbers in the G column lie among 46-60.
The numbers in the O column lie among 61-75.

So, there can be thousands of possible combinations of the numbers in these cards. A player has to choose one card from these cards.The numbers are announced by the caller and the players mark the number on their cards. The caller calls numbers until a person says "BINGO". Then the game stops and the prize is given to the winner.

Bingo is one of the best participation games and contributes a major part in the economy of Australia. Around 2 million people play bingo every month.
